ISLAMABAD – A live musical concert with known musicologist, composer and mystic singer Pervaiz Akhtar was held here at Lok Virsa media studio, Garden Avenue, Shakarparian.The event was organised by Lok Virsa (National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage) under its ongoing popular musical series of programmes. Explaining objectives of the programme, Lok Virsa’s executive director Khalid Javaid informed that Lok Virsa launched a musical series of programme titled as “Documentation of genealogical families in Pakistan” with a view to encourage youngsters in the families of reputed musicians (Ustad) to continue to practice the art they inherited from their elders. Actually it is an effort of Lok Virsa to pay tributes to the icons of Pakistani musical heritage, he added.ED, Lok Virsa apprised that his organization is also planning to hold more concerts under this series in future focusing on the young artists from all over Pakistan. Answering to a question, chief executive Lok Virsa said that his institution is in process of producing concerts of young promising artists who have their own genealogical roots and recognition in the world of music. In order to document the valuable contribution made by the Sufis and mystics, Lok Virsa has also started a series some years ago to publish services and teachings of the great Sufis in the book form. Thirty books have already been published. It is an on-going programme on the part of Lok Virsa. A number of festivals, called as Urs, marking the celebrations of various mystics and Sufis are held annually at their shrines featuring display of local traditions, folk games, folk music, musical theatre and folk cuisine. Lok Virsa documents all these major festivals for its archives.Pervaiz Akhtar is a musicologist and has postgraduate advance diploma in music therapy from UK. He has conducted many music therapy sessions. He has carried out some projects on music therapy for torture survivors and rehabilitation of refugees. He has published many research papers for international journals and daily newspapers. He has composed music on Saadi and Amir Khusrau. He has also been experimenting with Jazz music in the form of fusion. However he is composer and his specialty is singing of mystic Kalam. His four albums comprise of Punjabi, Siraiki, Ghazal and mystic songs which are already published in Pakistan and abroad. He sings Khawaja Farid, Baba Bulleh Shah and Shah Hussain.Pakistan is the land of great Sufis, saints and mystics like Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, Sachal Sarmast and Lal Shahbaz Qalandar who spread the message of peace, love and harmony to the mankind through their teachings and poetry. Sufism is a mystic tradition encompassing a diverse range of beliefs and practices. This mystic Sufi tradition is a binding force that brings people of diverse cultures together. The saints whose shrines dot the landscape are the meeting place of the masses, the rich and the poor, the rulers and the ruled serve as a humanizing force in society at both cultural and spiritual levels. The Sufi saints who came to Sub-continent in large numbers played a most important part in spreading of Islam all over the region, preserving the inner spirit of Islam and to convert a large mass into Muslim. They were indeed the men of high moral characters. They stood side by side with the poor masses in all trails and tribulation of the time. The concept of equality and brotherhood of mankind preached by the Sufis attracted the large number of poor people. A large number of music lovers, students, media persons and general public thronged the event and appreciated the thrilling performances presented by the artist.
