Drying up Khanpur Dam threatens intense water crisis

July 27, 2012

ISLAMABAD  – As the summers are taking a heavy toll on the lives of masses in the federal capital during month of Ramadan, water crises is further deepening as only five million gallon water remains in Khanpur dam.Severe water shortage in the coming days is feared to grip Rawalpindi and Islamabad as water in the Dam is dying out fast as only five million gallon of water is remaining.Due to decrease in the inflow of water, hot weather and no major rain in the catchments area, underground rocks and the dam’s bed has started to be visible at some points, which is an alarming sign.Several sectors of the capital city are already facing severe water shortage and the CDA has been unable to ensure regular supply despite tall claims. The dam authorities also confirmed that water level in the reservoir had reached an alarmingly low level.Water in the Khanpur Dam has lowered to a dangerous level, and if it does not rain, the reservoir of the dam will be insufficient to meet the needs of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. It is pertinent to mention that the Khanpur Dam is the biggest one that supplies water to the twin cities.
