ANF moves LHC for approver’s statement

RAWALPINDI - Putting MNA Syed Ali Musa Gilani, son of former premier Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, and MNA Makhdoom Shihabuddin in hot waters, the investigators of Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) probing into ephedrine smuggling case approached Lahore High Court (LHC) Tuesday, pleading for recording the statement of an approver in the case by the trial court of narcotics substance (CNS). Two-member LHC bench comprising Justice Ijaz Ahmed and Justice Ali Baqir Najafi issued notices to the accused and the complainant in the application of ANF for criminal review. The court deferred the eharing till July 3, 2012.The LHC was told by ANF Prosecutor Waseem Ahmed that the ANF wanted the CNS to record the statement of the accused Former Director General Health Dr Rashid Jumma but the trial court directed In-charge Prosecution to do so.Dr Rashid Jumma, an accused in Ephedrine quota scam, has been willing to become an approver in the case against other accused persons including PPP blue-eyed Makhdoom Shihabuddin and Syed Ali Musa Gilani. It is pertinent to mention here that the trial court earlier this month settling on the plea of Dr Jumma ordered the investigating agency to record the statements of the approver. The ANF, in its application, wrote that investigators wished for CNS to note down the statement of accused Dr Jumma, as approver in a bid to make the findings of the case more transparent. On the other hand, the LHC bench also heard the pre-arrest bail of Dr Rashid Jumma, while put off the hearing in post-arrest bail of former Drug Controller Abdul Sitar till July 3, 2012. In Ephedrine quota scam, ANF so far had handcuffed two chief executives of two pharmaceutical companies - Danas Islamabad and Berlwx Multan - for import quota for chemical and later using it in domestic market; former DG Health Asad Shafique and Drug Controller Abdul Sitar and got arrest warrants for PPP near and dear one Makhdoom Shihabuddin and Syed Ali Musa Gilani from an ANF court on June 21, 2012.
