RAWALPINDI - The local people celebrated Eid-ul-Azha with great religious zeal, fervour and festivity. Hundreds of Eid congregations were held while people also offered Eid prayer at mosques, Eidgahs, Imambargahs and other open areas.
Special prayers were offered for the progress and prosperity of the country, unity of the Muslim Ummah, solution of their problems and liberation of Muslim territories, including Indian held Kashmir.
On the occasion, tight security arrangements were made by the Rawalpindi police. Some 3000 policemen besides Elite force commandoes and lady police have been deputed outside the bazaars, shopping centres and sensitive public and private buildings. Strict security measures had also been adopted outside the Eid congregations, while police kept patrolling. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the city.
Soon after offering Eid prayers, people greeted each other “Eid Mubarak”, slaughtered sacrificial animals like goat, sheep, lamb, bull, calf and camel, distributed the meat and mutton among their relatives, friends and poor people and visited graveyards laying floral wreaths and offering fateh on the graves of their beloved ones.
The leaders, MPs and members of several politicians including PML-N legislators Malik Abrar Ahmed, Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, Malik Shakeel Awan, Zia Ullah Shah, Raja Hanif Advocate, Chaudhry Sarfraz Afzal, Chaudhry Ayaz, PML-Q Raja Muhammad Basharat, Raja Nasir, former Nazim Raja Hamid Nawaz, former PML-Q candidate Raja Faisal Advocate, Jammat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Sajjad Ahmed Abbasi, Shamas-ur-Rehman Swati, Malik Muhammad Azam, PPP city President Malik Aamer Fida Paracha, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI) Syed Zahid Hussain Kazmi, Awami Muslim League (AML) President Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, Pakistan Aman Party (PAP) Chairman Haji Gulzar Ahmed Awan also installed huge-sized banners in their constituencies wishing Eid happiness to their voters and supporters.
Regional Police Officer (RPO) Capt (retd) Muhammad Zubair, City Police Officer (CPO) Azhar Hameed Khokher, SPs, DSPs and other police officers offered Eid prayers at Police Lines Number 1.
In the Lal Haveli, AML President Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed slaughtered a camel on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha and gave its flesh to poor and destitute of the city.
Later in the evening, people planned a number of programmes. Some arranged Bar BQ parties at their homes while a number of families thronged public parks including Ayub Park, Zia Park, Jinnah Park, Nawaz Sharif Park, Lake View and other resorts like Murree, Pir Sohawa, Daman-e-Koh along with children and made “Tikkas” and “Kababs” from various aromatic spices and lentils on coals. The little children enjoyed and young girls enjoyed the swings and delicious food such as chana chat, gol gappay, burger, finger chips, pakoras, samosas and many other sweets.
The ATMs of almost all the banks remained out of service causing an immense trouble for the account holders.
Traffic remained off the roads whereas taxi cabs minted money from the passengers as per their own will.
As the government announced Monday as public holiday, tens of thousands of citizens also thronged the hill resort - Murree. Because of less deployment of traffic wardens, a gigantic traffic jam was witnessed on all the roads leading towards the hill station. People remained stuck in their vehicles for hours.
On the other hand, the shopkeepers swelled the prices of onion, potato, tomato, green chilies and mint and charged extra money from the buyers.
The people, who went to the native villages to celebrate Eid with their families, had to face humiliation at the hands of transporters who raised the fares.
