ISLAMABAD – Meeting of the National Judicial Policy Making Committee (NJPMC) will be held on coming Saturday at the Supreme Court Branch Registry, Lahore, under the chairmanship of Chief Justice/Chairman, NJPMC, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.The meeting will review the performance of district judiciary with respect to the oldest cases. The Committee will also review the efforts of Investigating Agencies to ensure timely submission of challans and steps taken by the Prison Departments for production of under-trial prisoners before Courts for hearing / remand.The meeting will be attended by Chief Justice Federal Shariat Court Agha Rafiq Ahmed Khan, Chief Justice Balochistan High Court Qazi Faez Isa, Chief Justice Sindh High Court Mushir Alam, Chief Justice Lahore High Court Umar Ata Bandial, Senior Puisne Judge, Peshawar High Court Miftah-ud-Din Khan and Chief Justice Islamabad High Court Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman.The Chief Justices, Supreme Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, High Court of AJK and Chief Judges of Supreme Appellate Court, Gilgit-Baltistan and Chief Court of Gilgit-Baltistan will attend the meeting on special invitation as observers.The meeting besides examining the implementation status of recommendations made for strengthening the district judiciary in terms of human resource and infrastructure, the Committee will also review the disposal of cases by Labour Courts within statutory period.Apart from this, the Secretary, NJPMC will give presentation regarding disposal of old cases.
The Committee will also examine monthly jail inspection reports, proposals for reforms in the administration of justice and addressing the grievances of overseas Pakistanis for early hearing of their cases against land grabbers.The Registrar Supreme Court has also convened a meeting of the Registrars of the High Courts on 1st February, 2013 at Supreme Court Registry Branch, Lahore to discuss the issues related to administration of criminal justice. Besides, reviewing the efforts of Investigating Agencies to ensure timely submission of challans, the meeting will also consider steps taken by the Prison departments for production of undertrial prisoners for hearing and other issues ancillary thereto.The meeting will also be attended by Home Secretary, Inspector General Police, Inspector General (Prison), Director General (Reclamation & Probation) and Prosecutor General Punjab and Secretary, National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee. Besides other, matters related to release of deserving convicts on probation and actions taken by the Provincial Governments for improving the living conditions in prisons will also be discussed.The recommendations of the meeting will be placed before the National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee in its meeting to be held on 02-01-2013 for evolving strategies to further improve the performance of criminal justice system.
