RAWALPINDI - The patients and their attendants are constantly facing problems owing to sale of edibles on inflating rates at Holy Family Hospital (HFH) canteen.The authorities concerned, who is responsible to control the prices of daily use items as well as edibles, seem in slumber, leaving tens of thousands of poor patients and their attendants at the mercy of the canteen owners, who are accused of looting them by selling all the items against the official rate list they have been provided by the HFH Administration at the time of awarding them the tender of the canteen for the year of 2012-13.During a survey, conducted by TheNation on Wednesday, it was revealed that the canteen owners have been earning illegal profit from Rs 5 to Rs 100 on the sale of all items such as milk, mineral water, nimko, cold drinks, sandwiches, burgers, biscuits, fruit cakes, feeders, cotton, handkerchiefs, woolen clothes for infants, pakoras, samosas, tea, chana chaat, dahe bhary, all kinds of milk shakes and fresh fruit juices with no official checks and balances on the part of HFH administration.Moreover, roti (bread) and different type gravies are also being provided to the consumers of high rates. Abid Khan, a poor labourer whose wife is admitted in the Gyne Ward, told this scribe that he has not enough money to purchase the required medicines and buying food at the same time. “Therefore, I decided to buy 250 grams of Pakoras with roti for lunch after seeing high price of pakora Rs 80 per kilo-gram” he said adding that the shopkeeper charged Rs 60 instead of Rs 20 for 250 grams pakoras.Shamida Khatoon, a lady who brought her 12-year-old daughter for medical checkup, said that her daughter was hungry and asked her to buy a glass of milkshake for her. She said that she had not bought the banana milkshake, price of which was Rs 30 mentioned on the price list, but the owner demanded Rs 50.A cup of tea, official price of which was Rs 15 in the list, was being sold at Rs 20, Mehmood Khan, an attendant of a patient, said. He demanded strict action against the contractor of the canteen.No concerned official was available for his comments about this profiting campaign has been launched by the contractors of the canteen.
