Sindh University teachers assail Pir Mazhar’s remarks

KARACHI - The Sindh University Teachers Association (SUTA) on Tuesday continued their daily token sit-in protest against the rejoining of controversial Vice Chancellor Nazir Mughul and demanded his immediate removal. According to a statement issued, SUTA President Dr Azhar Ali Shah, Vice President Dr Rabia Memon, Secretary Dr Arfana Mallah and Treasurer Asghar Raza Burfat strongly condemned the non-parliamentary language of Sindh Minister for Education Pir Mazharul Haq against the teachers’ body of Sindh University as reported in the media. They said this was the second time that Mazhar had used such language against the elected representatives of teachers’ body of not Sindh University. The first time he used such language was the time when the chancellor’s secretariat had decided to send Nazir Mughul on forced leave. At that time, the FAPUASA Sindh had announced social boycott of Pir Mazhar which is still intact until he extends public apology. “Now that the SUTA has issued a white paper against controversial Nazir Mughul, Pir Mazhar has once again resorted to threats and abusive language against SUTA leadership. Instead of considering the matter seriously and recommending the chancellor for setting up the independent committee for proper accountability of Nazir Mughul in the light of the white paper, Pir Mazhar has openly become his party and started false allegations against SUTA leadership,” a statement of teachers’ body said. Dr Shah and Dr Mallah said that they have no political agenda whatsoever as alleged by Pir Mazhar. They said being the elected representatives they are raising voice for the implementation of the demand put forward by general body of Sindh University Teachers Association comprising more than 400 teachers. This demand is also endorsed by the teachers, students and employees of other public sector universities of Sindh and many socio-political parties have also expressed their solidarity. They said that what Pir Mazhar wants the Chancellor to do with SUTA leadership is exactly what SUTA wants to do with Nazir Mughul. In the light of the white paper and also in the light of the findings of the judicial committee and JIT investigation reports, SUTA considers Nazir Mughul as a real culprit and demands the Chancellor that his name must be included in the FIR of Prof Channar and also in the FIR of murderous attack on Prof Amar Sindhu, Arfana Mallah and Rabia Memon. The bogus credentials of Nazir Mughul must be verified including his dual nationality and simultaneous job at universities of two different countries. The record of the land purchased for Dadu campus must also be verified and made public so that the faculty know where exactly the campus is going to be established. It is time now that Pir Mazhar must stop defending the culprit and make efforts to resolve the issue in the best interest of the university and students and also in the best interest of the future of education in Sindh, they said. The SUTA has appealed to the chancellor, the chief minister, the HEC chairperson, the prime minister and the president to take personal interest for resolving this issue by removing Nazir Mughul and set up an independent committee for proper accountability.
