Unpaid KMC workers clubbed by police

KARACHI – Law enforcers used truncheons and tear gas shells on Karachi Metropolitan Corporation employees when they tried to enter into Red-Zone area on Tuesday, demanding payment of two-month salaries.A number of KMC employees gathered outside the Press Club at midday and started marching towards the Governor’s House and Chief Minister’s House in the Red-Zone. A massive contingent of the Sindh Rangers and police tried to placate their rally near Fawara Square. The protesting employees, however, put up resistance and continued marching towards the Governor’s House. Upon this, the security personnel used teargas shells and batons on them, and arrested more than a dozen of them.According to the KMC union chairman, the police arrested at least 28 employees. He said they would soon devise a future strategy after the release of all their arrested workers. It may be mentioned here that over 30,000 KMC workers are without salaries since the start of June. Other KMC union leaders said that according to an agreement, the management had to pay salaries of August in advance, but as the Sindh Finance Department had not released salaries, it was unlikely that they got paid. They also threatened stiff resistance by placing garbage trucks near the Governor’s and CM’s houses. The police released all the arrested KMC employees afterwards.Spokesman for the KMC meanwhile said the Sindh Finance Department had released grants, so that the KMC could release salaries of its employees within the next two days.‘PML-F BELIEVES IN PUBLIC SERVICE’: Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Special Education, Imtiaz Shaikh said that the role of youngsters and women in upcoming elections is very important.
