KARACHI - For the first time in the world, government of Pakistan has planned to preserve 40 feet long and 30 ton heavy dead whale, taken to the Karachi harbour in February 2012.

Karachi Fish Harbour Authority (KFHA) Managing Director Abdul Ghani Jokhio said this while talking to TheNation here on Monday.
He said that the Pakistan Museum of Natural History in Islamabad had taken about one year to chemically preserve the whale.
He said initially the giant creature would be housed in the Pakistan Museum of Natural History in Islamabad while the fish would also be displayed in major cities of the country, adding that the KFHA is also planning to get back the 40 feet whale to Sindh.
Jokhio claimed that the conservation process of the 40 feet whale will be done first time in the world and it will be a privilege for the country to do so.
He said that the Marine Fisheries Department had completed all chemical procedures to preserve the fish.
KFHA TO SENDS NEWLY-CAUGHT WHALE SAMPLES ABROAD: Karachi Fish Harbour Authority on Monday sent samples of newly caught 15 feet long and four ton heavy whale-shark to marine research institutions after the dissection of the big marine creature that was dragged to Karachi harbour from Charna Island last Friday.
The KFHA Managing Director told TheNation that the research samples of the whale will also be sent to different research institutions of the world. He said that the research samples after the dissection of the whale had also been given to the Marine Fisheries Department of Pakistan, Karachi University’s Centre for Excellence for Marine Biology, Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and National Institute of Oceanography for further research.
These research institutions will identify the cause of the death of the fish.
He said the 15 feet long and four ton heavy whale-shark would also be preserved after some scientific procedures as the Center of Excellence in Marine Biology, University of Karachi has offered free of cost scientific procedure to preserve the fish.
He informed that the of the fish has been sent to The Pakistan Museum of Natural History in Islamabad for conservation of the fish, while the offal recovered from the belly of the fish has been buried.
As per Wikipedia, the whale Rhincodon Typus is a slow-moving filter feeding shark and the largest extant fish species. The largest confirmed individual had a length of 12.65 meters (41.50ft) and a weight of more than 21.5 metric tons (47,000lb), and there are unconfirmed reports of considerably larger whale sharks. Claims of individuals over 14 meters (46ft) long and weighing at least 30 metric tons (66,000lb) are not uncommon. The whale holds many records for sheer size in the animal kingdom, most notably being by far the largest living non-mammalian vertebrate, rivaling many of the largest dinosaurs in weight.
