KESC defaulters attack Khokar Club office

KARACHI – The Karachi Electric Supply Company has stated that its office in Khokar Club area of Shah Faisal Colony was attacked by a mob of defaulting power consumers.

In a statement issued here, the KESC said the mob belonged to the two 250kva faulty PMTs; Rafi Garden PMT and RETA plot/Usman Medicos PMT.  There are approximately 500 consumers connected to two PMTs with a cumulative default of around Rs6 million and a recovery ratio of only 50 per cent.
Due to persisting overloading on the PMTs they had become non-functional and as per KESC’s policy, replacement of defaulting, overloaded PMTs is initiated on the undertaking of clearing outstanding dues.  At around 4:40pm, a mob surrounded and then attacked the KESC Khokhar Club office, demanding replacement of the said faulty PMTs.
They mobsters damaged the furniture and equipment inside the premises, while the KESC staff on-site had to escape from the premises to avoid harm.
KESC stated that the recent upsurge in violence against the power utility by its defaulting consumers is not only alarming but also unfortunate. Consumers need to realise their responsibility as well since KESC has a stringent and zero tolerance policy against wilful defaulters and power thieves.
It said that those who assume that they can use free electricity were quite mistaken, as they were doing a wrong with majority of honest bill-paying consumers.
