SSGC melts down to staff’s self-immolation threats

KARACHI - Melting down to self-immolation threats of the contractual employees, Sui-Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has agreed to initiate dialogue with People’s Labour Union on January 16. According to details, scores of employees staged protest outside the Karachi Press Club in reaction to the torture and arrest of their workers by police at SSGC office on Tuesday. The protesters warned SSGC management that if their demands were not fulfilled the workers of the employee union would torch themselves alive before the KPC.Talking to the Nation, Chairman People’s Labour Union Sindh Balochistan Riaz Akhtar Awan told that police released the workers arrested last night outside the SSGC head office after the self-immolation warning from the workers.He said that the heavy contingent of police attacked the protesters last night and left many of them injured and arrested 25 workers.Riaz said that SSGC Industrial Relation Department Deputy Chief, who represents the SSGC management, gave a written invitation to the leadership of the Labour Union for the dialogue over charter of demand on January 16. He said that they had been trying to get their demands fulfilled based on four points approved by the SSGC management since Dec 17 last year. “We want the company to address our charter of demands immediately,” he said. He said that the Union had three major demands on charter: 1st, including the confirmation of contractual employees, 2nd, fixation of pay as per presidential order and the 3rd demand was 12 per cent of share certificate.He further mentioned that it will be decided in upcoming meeting weather they would continue their sit-in outside Karachi Press Club till January 16 or suspend it until the dialogue. The protest was organized by the People’s Labour Union (CBA) in which both contractual and regular employees from Karachi and other cities and towns of Sindh and Baluchistan participated.
