KARACHI - In consideration to the recent trends in Biochemistry, study of diverse fields in this discipline is mandatory. Similar to the fact that University of Karachi has a share of more than 28 per cent in the national stock of scientists, the 50-year history of the Department of Biochemistry, University of Karachi, marks an era of achievements, success and widening of new horizons in advance research in the fields related to Biochemistry. As a result of which, the alumni of this department are serving at key posts, not only in Pakistan but round the globe as well,” these views were expressed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser, Former Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Pirzada Qasim RazaSiddiqui, Dean Faculty of Science – Prof. Dr. NusratJameel during their address to a three day international conference on Biochemistry in the Post-Genomic Era. The event was organised by the Department of Biochemistry on the successful completion of 50 years of the inception of Biochemistry Department in the University of Karachi. While sharing the objectives of the workshop, chairperson Department of Biochemistry – Prof Dr Nighat Ahmed Siddiqui said that the conference aims to showcase progress in research in biochemistry and related disciplines and how these have integrated within the new fields of genomics and proteomics. A wide range of topics will be covered in various formats including speaker and poster sessions and workshops. She informed the audience about the upcoming events that are being organized to celebrate the department’s golden jubilee. Dr. Nikhat said we will hold five days of interactive symposia in addition to proteomics and neuroscience education workshops bringing together scientists and leaders in academia and in the health sector. Dr Sabiha K Hai in Zain Memorial Lecture shared her knowledge about the aging of brain and dementia. She informed that Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder causing dementia in affected patients. The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease aligh that with many other types of dementia in that the effected individual has problems with the way in which their brain processes and recalls information as well as how the individual is perceived by others.The conference was attended by a large number of participant, it will be continued for the next two days. Merit list for Masters/Diploma to be announced soon: Karachi University Admissions Director has announced that the merit list for Masters/Diploma Programme Admissions-2012-13 (evening programme) that was scheduled to be announced on July 10 would now be announced shortly. The new date for announcement of the list will be communicated soon.
