Bicycle bomb kills one in Karachi

A bomb planted on a bicycle Wednesday killed one person and wounded at least 15 in Pakistan's southern port city Karachi, officials said. The target of the attack appeared to be a bus from the Pakistan national space agency SUPARCO (Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission) which was taking workers home, they said. "It was a remote-controlled bomb and was planted on a bicycle. Looks like that bus was the target," Sharfuddin Memon, home ministry spokesman of southern Sindh province told AFP. The incident took place in Muwach village, in the suburbs of Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, close to the insurgency-hit southwestern province of Baluchistan. Senior police officer Akram Naeem told AFP the motive of the attack was unclear but confirmed the bus was the target. Karachi is Pakistan's financial capital and a human rights organisation said last month that ethnic, sectarian and politically-linked violence has killed at least 740 people so far this year in the city. The past violence has largely been linked to ethnic tensions between the Mohajirs, represented by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, and Pashtun migrants from Pakistan's northwest affiliated to the Awami National Party.
