chi - Sindh Food Department has fixed ex-mill and retail rates of flour at Rs22 and Rs23.50 per kg respectively to provide relief to the inflation-stricken people across the province.
Agha Taimoor Khan, Acting Sindh Food Minister, informed at a press briefing held at Sindh Secretariat, here on Saturday. Provincial Food Secretary Aijaz Ali was also present on the occasion.
The minister said the government has devised a comprehensive policy to ensure sale of flour at Rs23.5 per kg at retail level across the province. He said that all Food Directors and other relevant officials in today meeting had been assigned duties to ensure the flour sale at government rates. The minister said stern action would be taken against the flour millers and brokers found selling wheat at exorbitant rates.
The minister said that the ex-mill rate in interior Sindh however had been fixed at Rs19 per kg. Agha Taimoor said that millers were selling flour at Rs25 ex-mill rate in violation of government rates and brokers adding to this price, leading the rates to Rs28 per kg. He said that teams of food department would start raiding flour mills across the province from today besides taking stern action against the hoarders. Recently, raids were conducted at various wheat godowns across Sindh, particularly in Dadu district in which several hoarders were held and illegal wheat stocks were confiscated, the minister added.
He said that the food department teams had also been carrying out checking along borders of Sindh to stop wheat smuggling. The minister said that imported wheat, which was due to be released by Septmeber 2008, would now be released to the millers before its scheduled time after a meeting with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah.
He said Sindh government had withdraw the ban on inter-district movement of wheat in the province some days back to bring wheat prices down. The minister said that the millers have been facilitated to store 3,000 wheat bags at their stocks instead of 15,000 as decided at a recent meeting with the chief minister.
