Prof Iffat Yazdani termed the reversible causes of renal injury like dehydration, blood loss, diarrhea and vomiting and excessive sweating.
She was of the view that the kidney needs fluid replacement and if not given adequate amount of fluids the kidney will go into acute renal shutdown.
The period of time involved may be 24- 48 hours. The kidney should respond within 24-48 hours and if it does not then it will take three weeks for the kidney to recover. Other common causes are infections. Drugs and snake bites. The commonest cause of acute renal failure in our part of the world still remains infection and dehydration.
Prof Manohar Lal emphasised that the diabetics should take good care of their kidneys as they are more prone to infections and hypertension escalation and moreover they may develop dehydration at the least provocation. About 30% diabetics have protein in their urine and this causes further compromise on their heart which may cause further kidney damage. In case of any protein appearing in their urine they must contact a nephrologists.
