KARACHI – The municipal services of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has failed to lift garbage from various parts of the metropolis, creating a serious concern for the environment across the City.

Dr Attaur Rahim, a resident of Block 21, FB area while talking to The Nation, said that laying garbage on the roads in the residential areas was creating several sorts of health hazards and a proportional increase in viral diseases among the residents had became a common factor of each house. The dumps of garbage are witnessed in different areas of all 18 Town Municipal Administrations. The major affected areas, including Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, North Karachi, Shadman Town, Garden, Saddar, Soldier Bazaar, Mehmoodabad, Banaras, Orangi Town Burns Road, Lyari, Liaquatabad, Malir and other parts of the City.
These mentioned areas have been neglected by the KMC officials concerned as the dumps of garbage are lying at the corners of many key roads. Sources added that at least 75 machineries including 16 heavy sweeping machines, mini garbage lifters and other machinery and tools were bought in last tenure of City District Government Karachi which is worth billions of rupees.
They said at least 70 per cent machineries bought in recent past was not working properly due to lack of maintenance by the Machinery and Tool Department of the KMC despite the government’s approval of a handsome budget for the maintenance of machinery.
An official of the M&T department said that 43 out of total 75 cleaning machinery was lying out of order.
It is pertinent to mention here that defunct City District Government Karachi (CDGK) had initiated cleanliness campaigns at regular intervals with a view to keep the city clean; however, the KMC administration has failed to launch effective cleanliness drives.
Director M&T Noman Arshad and Director Municipal Shokat Zaman were not available when The Nation contacted.
ADMINISTRATOR MEETS IRAN DELEGATION: KMC Administrator Hussain Syed met with Iranian delegation, headed by Deputy Consul General Muhammad Raza Bak Sehrai in his office and discussed matters of bilateral relations and mutual interest. The Administrator Karachi said that Pak-Iran had everlasting friendship and both the countries were neighboring Islamic countries, said a statement issued on Saturday.
He said that Iran had always supported Pakistan and Pakistanis had feeling of love and brotherhood for people of Iran.
Delegation discussed with Administrator Karachi about availability of healthy meat by automatic plant, export of cattle and Solid Waste Management. The Administrator Karachi said the opportunities of availability of meat by automatic plant were available on large scale in Karachi and could also cater for the needs of Iran. Iran delegation informed that the purpose of his visit was in connection with the implementation of the MoU signed with Mayor of Mashhad for investment in Solid Waste Management and Automatic Plant for meat. The Administrator Karachi informed delegation about the needs and resources of Karachi.
