KARACHI - International Anti Narcotics day was observed on Friday. A huge quantity of seized narcotics will be destroyed on June 26, on the eve of International Anti-Narcotics Day.A joint ceremony of various anti-narcotic agencies of Pakistan was held at Pakistan Coast Guard Head Quarters to internationally highlight efforts against drug abuse and smuggling. Deputy Director of Pakistan Coast Guards Colonel Muhammad Younis told media in a briefing. Representatives of Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), Pakistan Custom, Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, Sindh Excise and Taxation, Sindh Police and other agencies and organizations working against drug trade were also present.He said that the ceremony at Hawks Bay will be organized by Pakistan Coast Guards under the auspices of Inter Agency Task Force on Counter Narcotics (IATF), which consists of 30 federal and provincial agencies putting up a unified front against the menace of narcotics.He informed that a total of 53,299.50kg of hashish, 1719.20kg of heroin, 716.551kg of opium, 2.51kg of cocaine, 10, 70388 bottles of liquor and 17,049 packets of Gutka will be destroyed in the ceremony.He added that other events are also being organized to create awareness among public against drug abuse including a cycle rally on, June 23, T-20 cricket matches between IATF Eleven and Showbiz Eleven on June 24 and a variety programme on June 30.HEC team visits Benazir varsity: A team from Higher Education Commission comprising three members namely Dr Shahid Mir, Dr Zubair Ahmed Shaikh and Fida Hussain visited Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University Lyari for accreditation. A statement on Friday said that the team was given a multi-media presentation on all the different aspects such as the background of the university establishment, infrastructure and future plans. The team went around visiting various buildings of the university, like academic block, library, smart classrooms, teachers common rooms and cubicles, computer laboratories , gymnasium, auditorium and mosque. They were shown the transport facilities such as cars for the officers, buses for students and vans for the teachers. The committee expressed satisfaction and appreciated the progress and efforts made by the University so far to start the classes for marketable short courses as well as undergraduate programme. Moreover on the birthday anniversary of Benazir Bhutto Shaheed was celebrated at Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University at the main campus of Lyari on Thursday.In this regard, the management of the university also cut the cake in the presence of the staff and faculty members. The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Rashid A. Shah, addressed the gathering and highlighted the achievements of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.
