KESC fires 101 more employees

KARACHI - The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) management Friday sacked more than 101 employees under its annual employees’ performance evaluation system.

KESC Labour Union leader Latif Mughal told TheNation said that the KESC high-ups directed the zonal officials to start compiling the employees’ annual appraisal report to evaluate the performance of KESC workers. Moreover, the KESC zonal officers were also instructed to report the poor performance of at least 10 per cent of the employees to put their name on surplus list of the company, he added. Latif informed TheNation that the management has planned the conspiracy to sack the prominent employees’ leaders and to outsource the hiring of employees system. He added that the KESC management was not interested to hire the permanent or contractual employees directly to safe amount and facilities. He alleged that KESC administration has decided to terminate the employees fall in the surplus pool, adding that the administration has directed the 54 centres of the company to prepare the list of more employees for surplus pool. As per details, thousands of employees are working in 54 centres of the company but management, under the excuse of financial burden, has started preparing the performance reports so that they could be sacked.
KESC Spokesman Ameenur Rehman said that it’s an Annual Employees Performance Evaluation System like other professional organisations and the process is 3rd performance appraisal cycle, aimed at developing a culture of reward and performance accountability. He further said that this system is to reward the high performance and identity of low performer staff and also gives them the chance to further improve their performance.
He said KESC has also promoted 308 employees and increment has awarded to around 4,000 employees on their good performance. He informed TheNation that the basic object of the system is to acknowledge the high performance and encourage them to perform even better.
It is pertinent to mention here that on March 12, 2012 “TheNation” also published the news item of KESC planned to sack more employees and in the news KESC Spokesman had informed that the preparation of the employees’ performance report was a routine matter, adding that the management had no plan to terminate employees.
Meanwhile, in June 2011, the KESC management terminated at least 4,000 employees through the same procedure.
