KARACHI – Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) Director General has suspended at least 24 officials over minor negligence, whereas illegal construction of hundreds of sites still continues with the connivance of the SBCA. According to details, the SBCA has failed to vacate at least 203 declared dilapidated and dangerous buildings across the metropolis and suspended several officials over some pity negligence. The officials suspended were not charged with any major violation while those officers, having close association with the builder mafia, are yet not suspended despite the violation of major construction laws.Sources privy to the matter told TheNation that the design section officers of the SBCA, responsible for illegal construction, are still holding their offices although the department have been suffering loss of billions of rupees due to negligence of design section officers.Sources said that illegal construction works of 186 buildings remain continued in different areas of Liaquatabad Town including Nazimabad, Rizvia Society and Liaquatabad.One of the victims, wished to be anonymous, said that he used to perform his duties as an inspector and being suspended over the violation of constructing a balcony in a residential unit, although an inspector could not supposed to do anything without the approval of high ups.Similarly, in North nazimabad Town at least 73 buildings are under construction and builder mafia is constructing four or five storey building even the SBCA rules do not allow the construction of more than two floors.In Gulshan-e-Iqbal area, more than 64 building are under construction against the law of the SBCA but high ups of the department could not supposed to stop illegal construction because of their higher lucrative opportunities. In Gulberg Town as many as 101 buildings are under construction without the approval of extra floors and conversion of land status from residential to commercial.The Director General of SBCA, Manzoor Qadir resumed the charge after long leave and suspended at least 24 officials of the department, charging them of allowing illegal construction and negligence. It is pertinent to mention here that despite the violation of a number of above-mentioned sites, the DG suspended 24 officials over the construction of 12 minor violations.An official said that the officers were suspended over political grounds. The department is divided on ethnic lines because the transferred officers and employees were considered as the workers of a political party.
