KARACHI – Various anti narcotics agencies of Sindh have destroyed a huge quantity of narcotics on Tuesday to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
In this connection, a joint drug destruction and burning ceremony was held here at Hawksbay on Tuesday.
A statement of Coast Guards said that the ceremony was arranged by the Pakistan Coast Guards under the auspices of Inter Agency Taskforce on Counter Narcotics (Sindh).
It said that with relevance to the ceremony, a concerted effort was made by all the agencies of Inter Agency Task Force to promote awareness for this sacred cause. The aim was to expose high risk that drugs casts onto the humanity especially to the young generation and our common future. It was pointed out that the Inter Agency Task Force consists of 30 Federal and Provincial Agencies putting up a unified front against the menace of narcotics. This year, a total of 23,351.9 kgs of hashish, 185.115 kgs of heroin, 45,301 bottles of alcohol, 3,623 cans of beer, 272,950 packets of gutka, 2,000 kgs of betel nuts and 1,249.400 kgs of potassium permanganate was destroyed having an estimated value of over hundred of millions.
Cases amounting to an approximately equal quantity are also pending in different courts of law and awaiting disposal.
Pakistan Coast Guards destroyed 3,616.490 kg of hashish, 9.850 kg of heroin, 39,617 bottles of alcohol, 3,483 cans of beers, 272,950 packets of gutka, 2,000 kg of betel nuts and 1,249.400 kg of potassium permanganate.
Murtaza Javed Abbasi, chairman National Assembly Standing Committee on Narcotics, distributed commendation certificates among the officers and operatives of various agencies who had made significant seizures during the year.
