KARACHI – A spate of coordinated attacks killed at least twelve people, among them political activists, in different city neighbourhoods on Wednesday, police officials said. In the worst incident, two workers of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) were killed and four others wounded in a hail of bullets in Surjani Town. Police officials said PPP ward president Umar Shaikh and his friend, Lala Fazlur Rehman, were killed and four other party workers were wounded, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them and fled. The injured were ferried to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment. No case was registered till the filing of this report. Within the remit of the Rizvia Police Station, two bike-borne duos opened fire at a tea stall, Zamidar Hotel, wounding four people. The unidentified attackers fled the crime site, however. Police officials said that Zafar Akhtar Alvi, 35, Zahid Hussain Jafri 30, Altaf and Iqbal were ferried to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where Alvi and Jafri expired. They said the victims belonged to the Shia sect and had association with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). The motive behind the killing could not be ascertained until the filing of this report. After the incident, tension simmered in the area and all commercial as well as non-commercial activities came to a halt.Another MQM worker was gunned down in Hajji Ebrahim Goth. Officials of the Korangi Industrial Area Police Station said Mehar Ali, 32, son of Muhammad Usman, was going to pick his kids from their school, when unidentified gunmen targeted him, causing his instant death. His body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medico-legal formalities, and later handed over to his heirs. The police officials suspect that it might be a targeted killing.In FB Area, a man was riddled with bullets by unidentified attackers, riding a motorbike. Identified as Mirza Zahir Abbas, 34, the victim was heading towards his residence within the precincts of the Samnabad Police Station after dropping his children at their school when the gunmen opened fire on him. After autopsy at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, the body was taken away by the heirs. Police officials suspected that it be a sectarian killing.In Orangi Town, a man said to be a drug peddler was gunned down by unidentified attackers. According to officials of the Mominabad Police Station, the victim, Naeem Baloch, son of Abdul Karim was standing near his home, when the gunmen appeared on the scene and fired a volley of bullets at him. Baloch died on the spot. His body was handed over to his family after the completion of medico-legal formalities at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The police officials further said the victim was a drug peddler.A man was killed and two others wounded in another shooting incident at a Wednesday bazaar in New Karachi area. Nisar, his younger brother Nadeem, and another passerby, namely Waheed, were fatally hurt, when unidentified gunmen, riding a bike, sprayed them with bullets and escaped. Later, Nisar succumbed to his gunshot wounds at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.Separately, a man died following an attack by unidentified assailants near Nippier Road. Bilal, 27, was ferried to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where doctors pronounced him as brought dead.In Garden area near Fowara Square, a snacks vendor, Khalid Gafoor, 34, was shot dead. Police officials said the victim was sitting at his eatery, when two armed riders appeared and shot fires on him. He sustained multiple bullets and died instantly. The body was handed over to the heirs after the completion of medico-legal formalities at the Civil Hospital Karachi. Police officials could not ascertain the motive behind the murder.Unidentified attackers killed a man, Nazeer Ahmed Nawab, near Ghareeb Shah Shrine in Hansabad area. According to police officials the victim was sitting outside his home when attacked. His heirs took his body for burial after post-mortem from the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Meanwhile, a sack-packed body was recovered from Mirza Adam Khan Road within the jurisdiction of the Chakiwara Police Station. Investigators said the victim, identified as Khurram Shahzad, 32, son of Babar Azam, a resident of Maripur, had been kidnapped by some unidentified culprits. He was subjected to severe torture before being killed. The body was handed over to the heirs after postmortem at the Civil Hospital Karachi. A case has been registered against the unidentified killers.
