EC wants increase in army presence

KARACHI  - The staff of the Election Commission is busy in verification of voter lists all over Karachi, while troops from Army are providing them safe and secure environment.An ISPR statement here on Sunday said that Lieutenant Colonel Naseem looking after the West Zone went around in Banaras area and reviewed the ongoing verification survey.He visited the Assistant Registration Officer’s office and was briefed that the house count in Banaras area has been completed and now the voters verification is 70 per cent completed. The Election Commission staff working in the field also expressed their contentment of Army’s presence and expressed that they feel more secure due to enhanced security measures and can carry out their work without any political pressure and with complete peace of mind. The Sector Commander Lieutenant Colonel Naseem assured the EC staff that as per the directive of Supreme Court, Pak Army will provide them complete security till the completion of their work.INP adds: The Election Commission of Pakistan has demanded an increase in the strength of army personnel for verification of voter lists.According to sources, the Chief Election Commissioner has written a letter to Corps Commander Karachi, saying that additional army strength is needed for the verification of the voters list in Karachi.Presently, over 4,000 army personnel are involved in the verification of voter lists in Karachi but this is a small number for such a heavily populated mega city as Karachi.The Chief Election Commissioner demanded increase in the army strength to speed up the process.
