LAHORE - Kamran Murtaza of Asma Jahangir-led Independent Group was elected president of Supreme Court Bar Association in the election for the year 2013-14 held on Thursday.
Murtaza secured total 1,032 votes against his main rival, Amanullah Kanrani of Professional Group of Hamid Khan, who obtained 874 votes.
According to unofficial results, Murtaza and Kanrani secured 436 and 392 votes, respectively, from Lahore, 219 and 118 from Islamabad/Rawalpindi, 115 and 141 from Karachi, 28 and 16 from Abbottabad, 37 and 26 from Bahawalpur, 61 ad 59 from Multan, 64 and 55 from Peshawar, 55 and 36 from Quetta, 5 and 19 from Sukkhu and 12 and 12 from Hyderabad.
The third candidate for the president’s slot, Rab Nawaz Raja, bagged a total of 58 votes from all polling stations.
The slot of secretary was also grabbed by the Independent Group as Asif Mahmood Cheema got 913 votes and his rivals, Azmatullah Chaudhry and Mian Aslam, secured 584 and 292 votes, respectively.
Abdullah Kakar was elected as vice president from Balochistan seat by getting 1,048 votes in one-on-one contest with Jahanzeb Khan Jadoon who bagged 767 votes.
Professional Group could secure one seat only as its Rana Naeem Sarwar was elected vice president from the Punjab seat. Muhammad Sadiq Hidayatullah and Syed Sardar Hussain have already been elected unopposed as vice presidents from Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, respectively.
Raja Muqsit Nawaz Khan and Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan have also been elected unopposed as additional secretary and secretary finance, respectively. A total of 1,824 voters cast their votes out of 2,720.
