LAHORE - The Government College University Lahore is the only educational institution of Pakistan where as many as forty-nine student unions, which are called societies are now active and playing a crucial role in personality development of Ravians by engaging them in intellectual, cultural, co-curricular and sports activities.
Addressing the ceremony, the VC proudly said these student unions were totally apolitical and include the prestigious GCU Dramatics Club, Debating Society, Majlis-e-Iqbal, Government Colleg Universty Welfare Society, Nazir Ahmad Music Society , Library Society, Quaid-e-Azam Political Science Society, Punjabi Majlis, Dunnicliff Chemical Society and Media Watch having their separate offices in the university premises, presidents and annual financial budget which they spent for the professional and personality development of their members.
He said that these student bodies and dedicated teachers remained the strongest pillars of the GCU Lahore in its journey of 148 years and produced great alumni like Allama Muhammad Iqbal, Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Prof Dr Abdus Salam. He said the literary works and achievements of these great Old Ravians were like lampposts which guide them to peace and progress.
Prof Khaleeq said that the GCU was established in 1864 by the British with an aim to make it a one of the best world-class centre for the higher learning. He said that his faculty members and university administration are working day and night to get GCU its due place in the ranking of world best universities. He called upon the alumni to play an effective role in development of their alma manter through financial, moral and intellectual support.
The Vice Chancellor announced holding grand celebrations on the 150th birth anniversary of the Government College University Lahore, saying that all Old Ravians from India would also be invited on the auspicious occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Abdul Majid shared the experiences of his 12-year stay at the Government College Lahore as Principal.
