LAHORE A furious Punjab Chief Minister has suspended the DSP of the Ichhra (police) Circle and his entire team after he found the cops guilty of the death of one Muhammad Rafi, the alleged robber, in the police custody a few days back.
During his visit to the home of the torture victims family on the day of Eid, Shahbaz Sharif, who was accompanied by Senator Pervaiz Rashed, expressed his strongest displeasure over the police performance.
He said: I had doubled their [polices] salaries, thinking they will provide justice to the aggrieved. But from frequent public complaints, it seems that cops themselves are involved in committing of crime.
The Chief Minister directed DIG Major Mubashir Ullah to ensure immediate imprisonment of the guilty cops. He also gave Rs1 million cheque to the widow of the deceased, with the assurance that she 'will be provided justice.
According to the findings of DIG Major (retired) Mubashir Ullah Khan, DSP Mustansar Bajwa and Inspector Aslam tortured the deceased so severely that he swallowed acid, which claimed his life.
DIG Mubashir further found during his investigation that the DSP illegally detained Rafi. The victim was also brutally beaten up by the cops to confess his crime, according to the DIGs findings. During the course of the inquiry, it was proved that the recovery made from Rafi by the DSP was artificial. The 1 kg of gold and other jewellery, recovered from the 'robber, was not real gold, the DIG held in his inquiry.
Rafi, a goldsmith by profession, was taken into the police custody on charge of committing a robbery on Aug 23 in Gulberg. Later, police killed him but maintained that he had committed suicide.
