LAHORE - Judicial Magistrate Malik Shafique Ahmed on Tuesday sent the accused owner of Khalid Rauf and Company on 14-day judicial remand allegedly involved in using substandard material in construction of pedestrian bridge on the Ring Road at Harbanspura which collapsed and caused the death of a truck driver.

The North Cantt Police produced accused Khalid Rauf before the court seeking seven days physical remand on plea to investigating the matter. Meanwhile, the deceased’s brother, his wife and seven daughters submitted an affidavit before the court stating it was an accident and they did not want to proceed against the accused. The judge however sent him on 14-day judicial remand with direction to produce him on July 17.
In previous proceeding the accused had submitted to the court that if he was guilty then other agencies should also be arrested that had cleared the bridge after construction. Counsel for the accused said that the pedestrian bridge collapsed accidentally and not due to any sub-standard material used. He contended that the bridge collapsed after the truck collided with it. He implored the court that section 302 of PPC does not fall in this case. While prosecution implored the court that it was clear negligence on the part of the accused.
Acid attacker gets 14-year jail term:  An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Tuesday awarded an acid attacker Danish and his mother Nasrin Bano, 14 years and three years imprisonment, respectively.
Danish along with his mother Nasrin Bano went to propose Yasmin in Manga Mandi in 2009. When the girl’s family refused the proposal, Danish threw acid on her face. The counsel of the victim contended the court that the accused be awarded a strict verdict for committing such an atrocious crime. The court after hearing the arguments from both sides sentenced them.
