Proposed cuts in education budget flayed

June 04, 2012

LAHORE - The National Students Federation condemned the proposed cuts in education expenditure in the federal budget from 2 to 1.8 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP).
NSF Punjab President Arfan Chaudhry demanded that Education budget should immediately be revised and set at eight per cent of the GDP. The NSF Lahore chapter on Sunday staged a sit-in in front of the Lahore Press Club to demand an immediate increase in the budget from the current allocation of Rs47 billion.
Arfan said it had continued the legacy of the previous military-led regime by increasing non-productive expenditures like defence and debt repayments.
 throughout its five-year term.

He said it was not fitting a poor country like Pakistan to spend the bulk of its resources, Rs545 billion, on national defence.
Arfan said the NSF believed human security was a prerequisite for national security, yet the allocation of funds for education and healthcare, at Rs47 billion and Rs7 billion, was a fraction of the allocation for defence. The government had violated Article 25-A of the Constitution by ignoring basic and fundamental rights of the population like education and healthcare.
The NSF president demanded that the government immediately withdraw the cut and instead announce a raise in education budget.
