Petitioner Zaffarullah Khan of Watan Paty on Saturday moved a petition before Supreme Court of Pakistan’s Lahore registry against the dissolution of ECP. The applicant contended that a plea moved by Dr Tahirul Qadri for reconstitution of the electoral body be dismissed since the commission’s formation was as per the Constitution of Pakistan.
The petitioner stated that the chief election commissioner and members were appointed under Article 213 and 218 of the Constitution, after consultation with all the political parties and they could not be removed on anyone’s desire. He said that political some parties and people like Dr -Qadri wanted delay of elections. He stated that this request of negative element was also time barred as present commission was constituted in 2011 and it could not be challenged now. He stated that the request for dissolution of the ECP should be rejected and be termed as unconstitutional.
Lawyers strike: Lawyers observed a strike for killing of a senior lawyer Malik Jarar Hussain and boycotted court’s proceedings on Saturday. The strike was observed on the call of the Punjab Bar Council. Lawyers did not appear before the courts and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.
Lahore High Court Bar Association President Shahram Sarwar condemned the killing of Jarar Hussain. He said the government should provide full security to legal community as there was a visible increase in murder(killings) of lawyers. He expressed sympathies with bereaved family.
