LAHORE – The two-day international conference on ‘Language Sciences and Developing World’ organised by at Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) concluded here on Saturday.
On the occasion, Punjab Chief Minister’s Special Assistant for Higher Education Punjab said that Punjab government would try its level best to act upon all the recommendations set by the conference.
Co-convener Dr Ahmar Mahboob from the University of Sydney presented “The Lahore Declaration”, recommendations of the conference. He said that the importance of language lies in its role as one of the primary semiotic processes through which we construe and project realities. “Language is the basis of human interaction and development,” he said.
The conference was concluded with the recommendations to set up independent departments of (applied) linguistics (not embedded in English or other language programs), to develop research on local languages, to develop policies and pedagogies that were multilingual oriented and others. Dr Angel Lin of the University of Hong Kong presented the paper on “Asia as Method: Postcolonial epistemologies and implications for linguistics and education Research.”
Dr John Gibbons of University of Sydney, Australia presented his work on “A technique for revealing the Language Demands Made by School Textbooks”.
Dr Tariq Rehman of BNU presented his paper “The politics of Naming the case of Urdu”
PhD degrees awarded: Punjab University on Saturday awarded 5 PhD degrees to the scholars.
Shafiq ur Rehman in Botany on “Playnostratigraphy Middle Permian Sediments (AMB Formation – Artinskian) Salt Range, Pakistan”, Usman Aslam in Molecular Biology after on “Posttranscriptional Gene Silencing of Sugarcane Mosaic Virus in Sugarcane’’, Fauzia Saleem Alvi in Sociology on “Globalisation and Transition in Family Institution: An Analysis of the Pakistani Youth”, Sohail Afzal Tahir in High Energy Physics on “Elastic Scattering at Current and future Colliders” and Muhammad Shamsud Din in Islamic Studies on “Role of Parliament for Ijtihad A Research Study”.
