LAHORE - The Pakistan People Party-led federal government has moved a civil miscellaneous application in the Lahore High Court for becoming party in a contempt case against President Asif Ali Zardari. The application has been filed through a senior lawyer, saying that the federation was made respondent in the main petition over president’s dual office but the same was not done in the contempt petition.“Under the Constitution, the president is part of federation and under Chapter III (three) of the Constitution; the federal government can exercise its power in the name of the president. Therefore, federal government should be allowed to become a party to the contempt case,” the application said. The federal government had boycotted the LHC proceedings in dual office case and the court had decided the same by appointing amicus curies. But, the government is coming to defend the contempt case that shows a fear among the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).A full bench of LHC, headed by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, will hear this application as well as contempt petition on September 14 (today).Munir Ahmad had filed contempt petition against President Zardari through Muhammad Azhar Siddqiue. He contended that the LHC in May 2011 had declared that President Asif Ali Zardari could not hold PPP co-chairman office but the president did not relinquish political office that was tantamount to committing contempt of court.
