LAHORE – A goldsmith, who had staged a drama of his kidnapping for ransom amounting to Rs10 million, was recovered by Shafiqabad police on Friday. “He had kidnapped himself to mint money from his family to return a loan,” an official communiqué says.
As per police reports, Iqbal Ahmed had submitted an application with the Shafiqabad police station that his brother Muhammad Pervaiz, a jeweller by profession, was kidnapped by unidentified abductors on June 9, 2012.
Police registered an FIR (978/12) under section 365 of PPC against unknown person (s). DIG Lahore Muhammad Tahir Rai constituted police teams including CIA and directed them to recover the abducted man in due course of time. SP City Division Multan Khan, DSP Shafiqabad Anwar Saeed Kingra, SHO Shafiqabad Kamran Zaman and other police officers obtained the details of the phone calls and established the last call was made from Al-Munawar Hotel of Peshawar.
City Police spokesman Nayyab Haider said that police teams were dispatched to Peshawar but the accused-cum-victim had already headed towards Karachi. The teams, however, chased him and finally recovered him from Karachi, he stated.
During preliminary interrogation, the victim confessed to staging a drama in order to mint money from his own family members because he had to return loans amounting to over Rs15 million to different clients and people of the area. The spokesman said that the victim told the investigation teams that he was mentally stressed and the chief motive behind his self-abduction was loan. The DIG Lahore has announced cash prizes and commendatory certificates for the raiding parties.
