LAHORE – A junkie tortured to death a 70-year-old beggar and made off with a few currency notes from the old man in the Qila Gujjar Singh police precincts late Wednesday, police said here Thursday.
The old man, later identified as Baba Sadiq, was sitting on the footpath alongside a road in the Royal Park area after Tuesday midnight when a drug addict attacked him. According to the police, the addict, yet to be identified so far, brutally tortured the old man as the beggar offered resistance when the attacker tried to snatch cash from him.
The addict escaped after snatching cash from the bagger, who sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Mayo Hospital instantly, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The police later removed the dead body to the morgue for autopsy and are investigating with no arrest made so far.
Burnt: A 75-year-old woman was burnt alive while she was sleeping in the residential quarter situated in the Shalimar police vicinity, rescue workers said on Thursday.
The old woman, identified as Zubaida Bibi, was residing alone in the one-room quarter in the Bhogiwal locality. She was asleep when her quilt fell on the gas heater and caught fire instantly.
Rescue workers rushed to the spot soon after the happening and managed to put out the fire within 320 minutes but the woman was expired.
The police termed the incident accident and later handed over the body to the family.
Transferred: On the orders of acting IGP Khan Baig, Sargodha Investigation SP Javaid Iqbal has been transferred and posted as additional SP Iqbal Town Faisalabad, according to officials.
