Faceoff between two Khaggas

September 22, 2011

LAHO RE - With PML-Q high commands awarding ticket to Pir Muhammad Muzaffar Shah Khagga, the two Khaggas, Muzaffar of PML-Q and Walayat Shah Khagga, the PML-N contender will face each on October 13 in PP-220 (Sahiwal-1) by-polls. Both Muzaffar Khagga and Walayat Khagga are the nephews of the late Pir Ahmed Shah Khagga, who was elected MPA on Muslim League ticket several times and remained member of General Zia-ul-Haqs Majlis-i-Shoora. While this time, Pir Ajjam Shah Khagga, son of Ahmed Shah Khagga is also a candidate in PP-220. The local leaders of the constituency are of the opinion that Ahmed Shahs family being the traditional political family of Village Noor Shah, the real seat of Khaggas enjoys the support of the locals. However, possibilities of withdrawing candidature by Ajjam Khagga and his support to either PML-Q or PML-N contender could turn the table for any of the candidate in PP-220. Currently, Pir Muzaffar Shah Khagga is the joint candidate of PML-Q and PPP for PP-220, while Nazar Fatyana, former ticket holder of PML-N from the same constituency most likely to support the Muzaffar Khagga after being ignored for the ticket. While, Ajjam Khagga expected to support PML-N candidate, Walayat Khagga in case the former withdraw his candidature. The local leaders told this scribe that Walayat Khagga supported Ajjam Khagga in the local bodies polls and Ajjam became union council nazim of Noor Shah in the result of the local elections. Khaggas are the major clan residing in PP-220, while other meaningful clans include Fatyanas and Kamyanas, followed by settlers, which include Ranas, Jatts and Arians. The settler clans are expected to vote for the PML-N, while major share of the Fatyanas would go the PML-Q-PPP candidate and Kamyanas vote expected to split in favour of the both the parties. It may be noted here that PPP has more say in the Sahiwal district than PML-Q and PML-N, as in the result of the 2008 polls, PPP secured two national assembly seats, while PML-Q and PML-N got one seat each from the district. The seat of PP-220 became vacant after Pir Walayat Shah Khagga, former PML-Q MPA, who later joined the forward bloc was disqualified by the Lahore High Courts Election Tribunal for having fake degree. The petitioner against Walayat Khagga was Nazar Fatyana, the runner up candidate of PML-N in the 2008 elections. Walayat Khagga won the seat by bagging 24,880 votes on PML-Q ticket in 2008 general elections against Nazar Muhammad Fatyana of PML-N who secured 16,522 votes.
