One killed as pedestrian bridge collapses in Lahore

A huge part of a substandard constructed pedestrian bridge collapsed at Ring Road in Harbanspura area of Lahore on Thursday morning, killing a person. Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident.

According to rescue sources, a part of the bridge came down when a truck was passing under the bridge, badly damaging the truck trapped under rubble of collapsed bridge and trapping two persons under its debris.
Later, it was discovered that the one man had died in the truck. Due to bridge collapse, the traffic from airport to Harbanspura was suspended.
After the accident, rescue teams reached the spot soon and after continuing four hours rescue operation recovered one dead body and a seriously injured person from the truck.
Commissioner Lahore, police and other law enforcement agencies reached the incident site.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has ordered an immediate inquiry into the matter and to present the probe report of the incident. He has also formed an investigating team comprising Chairman of MIT, Secretary C&W, Chief Engineer South and Dean of UET.
The chief minister visited the incident site where he told the media persons that strict action would be taken against responsible persons.
Police have arrested the construction company’s owner Khalid Rauf on direction of the chief minister. Investigations are underway regarding usage of substandard construction material in making of the bridge, police sources said.
