PU collaborates with FMH to curb dengue

OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE - Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran, here on Tuesday, presided over the second meeting of Dengue Research Group, which has been formed to curb dengue virus on emergency and permanent basis. Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Akhtar, Director CAMB Prof Dr Tayyab Hasnain, Dr Saeed Akhtar, Dr Muhammad Idrees Khan, Dr Nasreen Muzaffar and other experts attended the meeting. Moreover, the experts of Fatima Memorial Hospital (FMH) have also joined hands with the PU to collaborate in Dengue Research Group. The experts of FMH included Chairperson Dr Shaheema Rehman, Dr Noor Fatima, and Dr Haroon Ehsan Technical Advisor Noor Centre for Research & Consulting Dr Shabnam Sarfraz also attended the meeting. Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran, appreciating the efforts of Dengue Research Group, said the PU would utilize all-out resources to carry out research on dengue and announced to provide research scholars to the team. He highlighted the need of coordination among the scientists of Dengue Research Group who were doing research on dengue. The experts agreed that dengue virus in Pakistan could be a part of bio-warfare from a big power. Encouraging the PU on Dengue Research Group, Dr Shaheema Rehman appreciated the efforts of VC Dr Mujahid Kamran and said he had taken a great step. She said this was a time of test for us and we needed to organize our resources. There is much talent in our country and we need to adopt a strategy to work and handle this virus, she said. She said with the decrease in temperature in December and January, we would have to take a strong action against the larvae of dengue. Meanwhile, Lahore General Hospital has established High Dependency Intensive Care Unit (HDICU) for providing modern medical facilities to dengue patient. The HDICU, set up at Medical Unit I will function under the supervision of Prof of Medicine Dr Ghayas-un-Nabi Tayyab. Earlier, MNA and Chairman Samanabad Town Emergency Response Committee for Dengue Mian Marghoob has directed the administrator of the town to issue notices to the owners of hotels, chicken shops and such shopkeepers who are not removing stagnant water accumulated in front of their shops. He passed these directions while presiding over a meeting in town office, here on Tuesday. Member Provincial Assembly Mehar Ishtiaq Ahmad and concerned officers were also present.
