Work on CDG uplift projects halted for indefinite period
RE - Work on the all the development projects of the City District Government, Lahore (CDGL) has been held-up for indefinite period due to non-payments to the contractors, sources informed The Nation on Sunday.
The sources said that the payments were stopped due to unavailability of funds with the CDGL and a number of cheques issued by the authorities concerned to the contractors were dishonoured.
It seemed the exchequer of the CDGL is getting empty day by day due to poor planning and spendthrift on some useless objects as well as on unnecessary projects, being started on the recommendations of the influential persons just for their personal interests.
However, the District Officer (DO) Finance and Planning Mian Waheed Ahmed clarified that CDG has released about Rs 150 million to the contractors while their outstanding amounts would be cleared soon after clearing salaries of the CDG employees.
A contractor on the request of anonymity told the Nation that he had been getting round of the CDG offices for couple of months but his outstanding payments were not cleared by the authorities and they were using delaying tactics.
He said that he had spent almost all of his reserved personal money on the development project because he was expecting that the authorities would instantly release his outstanding amounts for the completion of the remaining work.
On one hand the authorities concerned of CDG emphasize and stress them to complete the work within given time frame but on the other hand they used to held their amounts which is major reason in delaying completion of projects, he added.
He also demanded of the authorities concerned to clear the bills of all the contractors so that they could continue the remaining work of the projects because delay in work not only is causing nuisance for the public but also is cause of loss to the contractors.
He said that the contractors also have to pay wages to labourers and in case of delay in their payments they also stop working due to which the work suffers and leads to delay in completion of projects as well
In this regard, Mian Waheed said that the CDG authorities issued the payment cheques to the contractors through proper channel after submission of bills in the department concerned which is bound to release their outstanding amounts on the recommendations of the UC Nazims/administrators after completion of the work on the projects. However, all the payments of the contractors would be cleared in the first week of the June, he concluded.
