Ahmad Rafay Alam, an expert in environmental regulations and energy conservation, has suggested that the Punjab government should initiate a consultative process with the transport engineers, environmentalists and citizens before the launching of MTS. “The MTS is a very good idea as public transport is not only environmentally friendly but also plays a key role in the growth of economic and social activities of any city,” he said while talking to TheNation about the MTS. Rafay was of the view that development process should include periodic reviews. “The government can establish a review body that should evaluate development projects. Citizens have the right to know whether public funds invested in infrastructure have been well spent. Better evaluation that how efficient and successful the MTS will eventually be is the need of the hour,” he urged. Alam said that the previous governments had spent billions of rupees for the widening of the roads and construction works but the problems of the traffic could not be resolved rather it worsened.
