Shortage of water

July 02, 2012

According to a news item in Daily the Nation growers in Sindh are suffering up to 35 percent shortage of water at Guddu and Sukkur barrages and up to 60 percent for the tail-enders at Kotri barrage. Someone should tell them that with the increasing demands of an increasing population the shortages are going to increase every year. The last increase in supplies was 36 years ago when Tarbela dam was commissioned and Sindh was able to cultivate an additional 27 lakh acres. They can either get a further increase in supplies through Kalabagh dam in five years time or through Bhasha dam in 12 plus years. The choice is theirs.
