Resolving Balochistan conflict

After the warning of the Chief Justice of Pakistan that the situation in Balochistan was fast heading to a state where imposition of emergency would be warranted, the government took some steps. One major step, from which the seriousness of the government can be ascertained, is that the Frontier Constabulary has been placed under the control of the provincial government of Balochistan. This is a good step indeed. The government has also formed a six-member cabinet committee chaired by Prime Minister Gilani to engage the disgruntled Baloch leaders in a dialogue process. The dialogue process with various Baloch leaders will entail three stages: a) holding dialogue with all political parties of Balochistan believing in the federation; b) initiating talks with those nationalist groups which are working under the federation; and c) persuading the dissidents into participating in dialogue.

The unprecedented environment of reconciliation and accommodation has sparked hopes for implementation of the much-needed steps for resolution of the conflict in Balochistan. The leaders of major political parties have also expressed unanimity to resolve the Balochistan issue without any delay. All agree that only addressing the long-standing grievances of the people of Balochistan and giving them their rights can discontinue the bloodbath in the resource-rich province.
