A hush-hush affair

There has been no news about the Abbottabad Commission for quite some time which is making the whole affair confusing. Tasked with investigating the May 2 raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, the commission, constituted on May 30, 2011, initially showed some activity and reports about its meetings appeared in the media on a regular basis. But now no one speaks about it anymore. Even the media is silent. In the absence of any reliable information, many theories are doing the rounds – ranging from serious differences among the members, to scrutiny of the report’s draft by the institutions concerned, to delaying it intentionally till it becomes irrelevant. In the past too, the Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report was hushed up in a similar manner by the then PPP regime.

It may be noted that in addition to Bin Laden’s family members, most of the people who held important positions at the time of the embarrassing incident have already made their exit after ‘a meritorious and successful career in the service of Pakistan’. The list of some important players includes the then PM, foreign minister, defence minister, air chief, commander of air defence and the DG ISI. Are the people of Pakistan in for another ‘mitti-pao’ exercise?
Haroon Sikandar Pasha,
