According to media news, an Iraqi court has issued death sentence to Sunni vice President Tariq Hashemi and his aides. Tariq Hashemi is in Turkey these days and he said that the court’s decision is politically motivated. The gulf is widening between Malki ruling party and the Sunni National Alliance which is harming the country. This recent decision of the Iraqi court will further fuel sectarian and ethnic violence in Iraq. After the departure of international forces, Iraq is facing worse sectarian and ethnic violence. Just two days ago seventy people lost their lives in the oil rich Kirkuk City after a massive car bomb explosion. Poorly equipped and untrained Iraqi forces are not able to control the increasing number of sectarian violence and the peace situation has worsened. Due to Malaki government’s failure, car bomb attacks and killing of innocent people, has become daily routine. Even high security green zone, government offices and police recruiting centers are not safe from the terrorist attacks. After the US invasion and destruction of the infrastructure of major cities, the main players left without creating a stable government, they did not fulfil their promises regarding reconstruction of Iraq. Despite oil wealth, the country is facing huge economic losses. This is also due to lack of interest and bad economic policies, half of the population is below poverty line, rate of unemployment is still high and ordinary people find it hard to provide daily necessities of life to their families. The promise of green pastures and stable government that the US promised has not materialised. The freedom from Sadam Hussain comes at a great cost to the Iraqi people who never asked for this invasion and destruction of their country.KHAWAJA UMER FAROOQ, Jeddah, September 11.
