New forms of assaults

August 19, 2012

In his Independence Day’s message, President Zardari called for safeguarding the dignity and honour of the elected parliament by protecting it from ‘new forms of assaults’. He was obviously referring to the Supreme Court. In this regard, I would like to say that the Supreme Court is not assaulting parliament but it has definitely, and rightly, mounted an assault on the mega corruption of the elected government which came into existence as a result of this elected parliament.

The members of parliament are not sacred cows and if they have erred, deviated from the promises they had made to their electorates at the time of election and instead have embarked on a mission to protect the corrupt leaders of the government, then these misdeeds and ill intentions have to be checked by the Supreme Court. This is the very reason why Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry is now held in a much higher esteem than the elected parliament.
