There is a lot of ignorance on the subject of dams and in particular about Kalabagh dam. There is the unfounded fear that dams decrease flow in the river rather than increase it; that dams cause degradation of the Indus delta when they actually increase river flow; that Punjab will steal Sindh’s water because KBD is in Punjab, despite the fact that it is IRSA which supervises distribution of river waters, and Sindh has a higher representation in IRSA, and so on and so forth. The reason is that other than two or three newspapers, the rest of the newspapers do not entertain letters on this subject making them equally guilty of holding back progress in the country which can come only through growth in industry and agriculture. Also it is not good enough to just print letters. Newspapers should carry out investigative reporting and educate public opinion on the subject of dams through special reports by their correspondents.
