KHYBER AGENCY - As a lawyer of Dr Shakeel Afridi, who has been sentenced to 33-year jail for allegedly helping the CIA in the hunt for Osama bin Laden, on Thursday announced to file appeal against the decision, the defunct militant outfit, Lashkar-e-Islam (LI), denied any contacts with the accused and declared him an enemy of Islam and Pakistan.LI spokesperson Abdul Rashid Lashkari and Muhammad Hussein told media on telephone that they had no relation with Shakeel, adding that the LI did not receive financial or any other assistance from him and it was a bid on the part of political administration to defame the outfit. However, the LI Shura had imposed Rs 1 million fine and expelled Shakeel from his hometown of Bara three years ago, after some tribesmen complained that he was involved in organ trade. The government was under pressure and staged a drama by awarding punishment to Shakeel in order to pave the way for his safe release to please the US, Hussein argued. They claimed that Osama was a martyr of Islam and they would ensure an exemplary punishment to Shakeel. "We have no link to such a shameless man. If we see him we'll chew him alive," one of the militants said. Samiullah Khan, lawyer of Dr Shakeel, said he would file an appeal against the decision of the political administration in the commissioner's court today (Friday). "Our case is strong," Samiullah said., adding, "In our appeal we will take the stance that all the allegations against Dr Afridi are unfounded."He said the assistant political agent had no powers to award 33-year imprisonment and he did not gather evidences or recorded the statements of witnesses before announcing the sentence, which was against the parameters of justice.
