SHIKARPUR - Measles epidemic continued to take lives of children in interior Sindh, as 11 more children died on Wednesday in Shikarpur and other areas of the province.
Six infants died in Shikarpur while hospital sources said that 40 children are still under treatment. They said 19 children died in the city alone in the last 33 days. The most affected area is Kandhkot where two more children died while death toll in the area has reached 108. Casualties were also reported from other areas including Ghotki, Jacobabad, Khairpur, Sukkur and Salehpat.
Meanwhile, the provincial health department has started a door-to-door vaccination campaign in the affected areas.
In Larkana only, at least 30 children died due to measles outbreak, Secretary Health Aftab Ahmed Khatri could not confirm the details about the death toll in Sindh, while 731 to 2,000 children were identified as suffering from the measles and other deadly diseases.
According to sources, there are 30 deaths of children have been occurred only in Larkana district among UC Phul Mahar and Larkana surroundings, while fatal disease has spread havoc in different flood-affected areas of Kamber-Shahdadkot, Kashmore-Kandhkot, Jacobabad and other parts of province.
According to WHO reports, 210 children died and 502 cases declared and registered during 2012, while total 7274 cases are under investigation told WHO details.
According to the reports, within 24 hours more than 10 children have been died in Larkana district among 10 month old Ameer s/o Taj Muhammad Abro resident of Village Arija died in CMC Children Hospital due to measles, one-year-old Momal Jeho and Ali Raza Narejo resident of Village Jeho near Naudero Town were also died of measles disease and several others, among 20 more children surrounding districts and towns have been admitted in CMC Children Hospital Larkana in a serious conditions.
Despite of millions of utilisation on different sources Health department Sindh website was also not updated and there is no any information or data about the deaths of children in Sindh.
It is also pertinent to be mentioned here that Secretary Health Department Aftab Ahmed Khatri and large number of health team visited the Kamber-Shahdadkot, Larkana and other districts in Sindh but failed to provide accurate information. On a question about the confirm deaths of children in Larkana by a journalist, the Health Secretary and Executive District Officer and other concerned could not provide facts behind the murders and avoid the media men on the occasion.
Sources said that the admitted child patients identified as Masooma, daughter of Sajid Samo, Taufeeq Ahmed Mirani, and Shumaila Abro, Zuhra Magsi, Saba, Sonra, daughter of Nisar Ahmed Sangi, Arslan Soomro and others.
The parents of deceased children told that several other children suffering from measles, even vaccines are not available at EPI Centres of different locations sources told.
Taulka Health Officer Dr Khalilullah Shaikh told media men that 92 teams have been formed in 42 EPI Centres to vaccinate 397,622 children aged between 9 months to 10 years in 46 Union Councils of Larkana district from 30 December to 8 January 2013, further added that so far 38951 children have been vaccinated to prevent from measles disease.
He said 42 EPI Centres are providing the Health services in four tehsils of Larkana district, he informed that in last year 2012 total 681measles cases were reported and this disease mostly outbreaks in between two seasons.
