LAHORE – To prevent the use of cell phone SIMs as detonators on the chehlam of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the government will suspendcellular services in several cities from 8am to 10pm today.The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority stated Wednesday that services would be unavailable in various cities of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgat Biltastan and AJK. According to the notification, mobile phones will remain silent in 18 districts of Punjab, six each in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and in nine districts of Balochistan. The services will be unavailable in Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Multan, Sargodha, Jhang, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Hyderabad, DI Khan Bannu,Sukkar, Khairpur, Hyderabad, Noshero Feroz, Mirpur Khas, Tank, DG Khan, Khizdar, Sibbi, Loralai, Jaffarabad and AJK’s capital Muzaffarabad. Earlier, the Lahore police had submitted an application to the Punjab government for suspending cellular services in the city. The application called for suspending services in Lahore from 9am to 12am today. On the request of the police, the provincial government asked the federal government for the suspension of cellular services. The mobile phone stopped working in some sensitive cities of KPK at 12am.The suspension has been made as preventive measure and users have been notified about it in advance.The terrorists had carried out bombing by using SIMs as detonators.The government also suspended cellular services on Eidul Fitr, Eidul Azha and Ashura, citing security threats.Interior Minister Rehman Malik claimed that he had credible information that terrorists might use cell phones as detonators to launch offensives in various parts of the country. On Ashura cellular services were banned in all major cities that made it relatively peaceful as the number of killings was much less than everyone had feared, earning great praise for the government.
