GUJRANWALA– For the renewal of their contracts by force, the young doctors of the District Headquarters Hospital of Gujranwala ransacked the hospital building and tortured top official, the medical superintendent, on Wednesday, resulting also in the death of the father of five children. The doctors stormed into the office of the MS Dr Anwar Amanullah, thrashed him and forced him out. During the brawl, furniture and windows in the office were also broken. When resisted, they also manhandled other senior doctors on the occasion.

Meanwhile, police said that they have arrested the leader of the doctors involved in the disturbance. Following the whole brawl, the Young Doctors Association's Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan and other cities chapters boycotted in outdoor departments creating difficulties for the patients. The YDA has announced to close down outdoor service, including outpatient departments in the entire province in protest against the arrest of YDA Punjab head Dr Rashid and other leaders in Gujranwala. On the other hand, patients are facing extreme anxiety due to the closure of the said services amid severe cold in the province.
As a result of the doctors’ strike, Muhammad Sahrif, 50, the father of four minor children, was expired.
The YDA officials also thrashed the media persons for capturing their cruel face as the media men were busy capturing the hue and cry of the family of the deceased. They injured nine media persons. The doctors also resorted to aerial firing outside the hostel. Afterwards, the media men along with the Pakistan Medical Association officials staged a protest denouncing the brutality by the YDA members.
Dr Anwar talking to TheNation said, “I was sitting at my office when the YDA officials attacked the office and threw me out of my seat and manhandled me. Also yesterday at about 11am, they raided my office and damaged the furniture to get their contracts renewed. Later, I filed an application with the Civil Lines police station and today as a reaction, they attacked me.”  The MS said that 20 YDA officials including YDA Gujranwala President Dr Kashif Bilal had been mentioned in the FIR. He also said, “Today, they severely tortured Additional Medical Superintendents Dr Sohail and Dr Mubasshar.”
