Interior ministry ‘awards’ Kashmir to India in report

ISLAMABAD – The interior ministry has called the disputed Indian-occupied Kashmir as an Indian state in the report presented to the Supreme Court during hearing of Balochistan unrest case.

A Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, heard the Balochistan unrest case on Friday. The interior secretary presented a report before the court in which Kashmiri freedom movement has been called an insurgency tantamount to the situation in Balochistan. The report compares the restive situation of Balochistan with the turmoil in Indian states of Punjab, Nagaland, Assam and disputed land of Kashmir.
It seems that either the Interior Ministry has prepared the report in haste or it is unaware with Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir because Pakistan reckons the struggle of Kashmiris against India as freedom movement. On law and order situation in Balochistan, the report says that the performance of institutions in maintaining peace in the province is satisfactory. It states that democracy and elections can be helpful in dealing with insurgency and difficulties faced by the people of Balochistan.
APP adds: Ministry of Interior has clarified that in para five of a report submitted in the Supreme Court on Friday, the word ‘disputed’ was omitted due to an oversight. A statement, issued in Islamabad by the ministry, said that occupied Kashmir is disputed territory till such time that right of self-determination and plebiscite is conceded to the Kashmiris to exercise their free will to live according to their wishes.
