ISLAMABAD - The announcement of Prime Minister that was later reiterated by the Federal Finance Minister in his budget speech to convert the Prime Minister’s House into an educational facility would likely evaporate in thin air, as the security agencies have expressed serious reservations on the decision referring to security grounds because the PM’s House is located at ‘security red zone’ and surrounded by very important buildings.Top people dealing with the security of the red zone said that it is next to impossible that an educational institution could be established in the Prime Minister’s House, which is surrounded by Cabinet Division, President’s House, Pak Secretariat and the Parliament House.Sources in the government informed that the Prime Minister’s announcement to convert the Prime Minister’s House into a state-of-the-art education institution would be mere political slogan, as the building, with a total land of 41.20 acre of land with sprawling gardens and lawns on all the four sides of the Prime Minister’s House, located at a summit of a small mountain in the lap of Margala Hills, could not be opened for students and their visitors coming to the high security zone and that too on daily basis.A senior Parliamentarian from Opposition, preferring not to be named, commenting on the announcement of the Prime Minister said that it was just a point scoring exercise, as everybody knew it well that security clearance of such a decision could not be provided. He recalled that after conducting nuclear tests in 1999 the then Prime Minister Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif had also made such an announcement of converting the Prime Minister’s House into education institution, but later on security grounds the matter was shelved and added that this time too Gilani’s decision would also meet the same fate.Sources aware of the developments taking place in this connection informed TheNation that the security agencies dealing with the security of the red zone expressed their astonishment over the announcement made by the Prime Minister without seeking input on the matter from relevant quarters and said that how an education institution could be allowed to function in the compound which has common wall with Awan-I-Sadr while on the other side it is touching the boundary wall of Pak Secretariat. It is pertinent to mention here that the Prime Minister’s House spread over 41.20 acre of land, almost 55700 square meter compound would be converted into a state of the art educational facility as per the announcement of the Prime Minister. The Federal Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh reiterated the decision of the Prime Minister in his budget speech showing government’s commitment toward the project. It is interesting to note that the site of Prime Minister House was chosen by Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in early 80s when he was Federal Housing Minister in late Mohammad Khan Junejo’s cabinet and the work on the project also started during his government.Nawaz Sharif was the first occupant of the Prime Minister House as the premier in 1991 and incidentally was rounded up by the Army on October 12, 1999 from the same place when his government was toppled by the then Chief of the Army Staff General Pervez Musharraf.
