Interpretation of verdict by Sharifs unacceptable: PPP

May 06, 2012

MURREE - Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira on Saturday said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) did not require the interpretation by Sharif brothers and Chaudhry Nisar Ali of Supreme Court’s verdict on Prime Minister’s contempt case.

“It’s the people’s interpretation which is acceptable as the PPP enjoys their full support and mandate,’ said the Information Minister.
Talking to media men after inaugurating 15th Conference on Ophthalmology here, Kaira said all the allies of PPP had expressed confidence in Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani. He advised the Sharif brothers to do politics on real issues being faced by the country rather than influencing the court and to hold local bodies elections in Punjab following the apex court decision.
He said it was strange to demand resignation from the Prime Minister, who enjoyed the confidence of majority in the Parliament. “The parliamentarians are the real representatives of public and we have majority in the Parliament,” the minister added.
Kaira said those delivering lectures of decency should also adopt a decent attitude as they themselves were answerable to the public about the first NRO (National Reconciliation Ordinance) issued by a dictator for them. He said Chaudhry Nisar wanted return of 90s era but it was 2012 and the people of the country were well aware of their right to decide their fate.
He said holding political gatherings was a beauty in democracy. However, the PML-N gathering in Taxila might be a step to make preparations for local bodies elections which the apex court had ordered the provinces to hold. Kaira said it seemed that Sharif brothers again wanted to attack judiciary after 15 years. He said some of those involved in the assassination of Benazir Bhutto had been arrested and were facing trial in the court. Some were killed and one criminal had absconded abroad. The Punjab government was responsible to conduct investigation into the BB murder case because she was assassinated in Rawalpindi, he added.
Kaira said that good governance of Punjab Government could be judged from Rs 20 million laptops distribution ceremony on which Rs 30 million were sepnt.
He said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was responsible for toppling of democratic governments in past because of its politics of confrontation. It not only got dismissed its own governments but those of PPP also, he added.
Due to their negative attitude, Sharif brothers had to face the ultimate result and escaped to Jeddah after signing the NRO with dictator Pervez Musharraf, he noted.
Kaira asked the ML-N to hold local bodies election in Punjab to gauge its popularity among the masses. Replying to a question about PML-N talks of long march, he said the Sharif brothers wanted to occupy the Parliament, the Prime Minister House and the Federal Capital, but they would fail in their endeavour. The minister said it was on the PPP’s credit that it got the nation united on foreign policy issues. Negotiations were underway to settle issues with the United States and the NATO, he added.
Earlier, inaugurating 15th Conference on Ophthalmology, the minister said he would request the Prime Minister to allot a piece of land near NIH Islamabad for an eye hospital.
The minister also pledged to make all of his possible efforts for waiving off 16 per cent sale tax on the equipment used for operative procedures in the upcoming budget 2012-13.
He also distributed gold medals and shields among the participants of the conference, including foreign delegates.
